It is an inspiring, necessary book about agriculture because it is not just about agriculture.” Trained as a scientist, Fukuoka rejected both modern agribusiness and centuries of agricultural practice, deciding instead that the best forms of cultivation mirror nature’s own laws. As Wendell Berry writes in his preface, the book “is valuable to us because it is at once practical and philosophical. At the same time, it is a spiritual memoir of a man whose innovative system of cultivating the earth reflects a deep faith in the wholeness and balance of the natural world. Call it “Zen and the Art of Farming” or a “Little Green Book,” Masanobu Fukuoka’s manifesto about farming, eating, and the limits of human knowledge presents a radical challenge to the global systems we rely on for our food. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Now, in Defining Moments in Black History, Gregory charts the empowering yet often obscured past of the African American experience. But Gregory has always kept it indisputably real when discussing race in America, fearlessly lacing laughter with controversial truths in a manner that is inimitable his own. Known as much for his comedic achievements-as an actor, author, and social critic-as for his activism, Gregory is the forebearer of todays new generation of black comics, including W. and Medgar Evers, Gregory is an unrelenting, lifelong activist against social injustice, whether he was marching in Selma during the Civil Rights movement or organizing student demonstrations to protest the Vietnam War, participating in rallies for Native American and feminist rights or fighting apartheid in South Africa. Book Synopsis Dick Gregory has been an unsparing and incisive cultural force for more than fifty years: a friend of such luminaries as Dr. In his unapologetically candid voice, he moves from African ancestry and surviving the Middle Passage to the creation of the Jheri Curl, the enjoyment of bacon and everything pig, the headline-making shootings of black men, and the Black Lives Matter. About the Book In this collection of essays, Gregory charts the complex and often obscured history of the African American experience. ![]() 6/8/2023 0 Comments Into thin air by jon krakauer![]() Even his wife's ardent protestations don't make him waver from this goal.ĭespite his soft-and-chewy journalistic exterior, Krakauer is a wild man at heart. Remember: Originally, "the editors simply wanted to remain in Base Camp and report the story" (2.44), but Krakauer convinces them to shell out the extra dough so he can have a shot at reaching the mountain's lofty summit. Though he doesn't want to admit it, Krakauer has always dreamed of reaching the top of Mount Everest. And here we thought our older sisters were show-offs. ![]() Some people just do it all, you know? In Into Thin Air, Jon Krakauer pulls double-duty: On one hand, he acts as our narrator and details the events of a fateful day with journalistic clarity on the other hand, he's very involved in the proceedings, climbing Everest himself. ![]() ![]() ![]() As a child Brandon enjoyed reading, but he lost interest in the types of titles often suggested to him, and by junior high he never cracked a book if he could help it. We start out strong, with Nita looking at the body on the table her mother’s brought home for her to dissect, and we go hurtling forward at breakneck speed from there. But there was genuinely not one thing I could think of to improve this book! It’s been hyped quite a bit, and I’m pleased to report that the buzz isn’t misleading. I can’t believe I’ve given out another 5-star rating so soon after the last one. Now she’s going to do a lot of bad deeds to get it all back. Nita did a good deed, and it cost her everything. Now Nita is on the other side of the bars, and there is no line she won’t cross to escape and make sure no one can ever capture her again. Nita just dissects the bodies after they’ve been “acquired.” But when her mom brings home a live specimen, Nita decides she wants out - dissecting living people is a step too far.īut when she tries to save her mother’s victim, she ends up sold on the black market in his place - because Nita herself is a supernatural being.
