He converted from Catholicism to Protestantism, was imprisoned for marrying a high-born girl without her father’s consent, struggled to feed a family of ten children, and was often ill and in pain. Paul’s Cathedral-and perhaps the greatest love poet in the history of the English language. He was a scholar of law, a sea adventurer, an MP, a priest, the Dean of St. Sometime religious outsider and social disaster, sometime celebrity preacher and establishment darling, John Donne was incapable of being just one thing. From a standout scholar, a biography of John Donne: the poet of love, sex, and death.

The story centers on three characters, the protagonist Elijah Snow and his two teammates, Jakita Wagner and a man only known as The Drummer, who are part of an organization responsible for discovering the secret history of the world. Published by the Wildstorm imprint of DC Comics, it was originally supposed to run for 24 issues but instead concluded with the 27th issue. Planetary is a comic book written by Warren Ellis, drawn by John Cassaday and colored by Laura Martin. I couldn't! I got my hands on a pristine copy from the university bookshop ( I still have it, though it's now well-thumbed!) and I spent a week reading it, taking notes and desperately trying to think of counter-arguments. So I wanted to hate it, rubbish it, show it up as the propaganda of the 'running dogs of capitalism'! I was a committed socialist with anarchist leanings (a huge dichotomy there which I didn't see at the time!) and deeply in thrall to Marx, Marxism, Marxists and Marxians. I came to the book with preconceptions - Nozick was neo-liberal and Hayekian. It is really only know, at the age of 44, that I realise quite how much Bob Nozick's master-work has shaped my thinking on the state, politics and society over the past 22 years. This book had a huge impact on me when I read it at the age of 22 as a post-grad student of political philosophy. Two luminaries of the genre both taking a similar approach to one of the genre’s most popular tropes led some to wonder if a bit of animosity had risen between the two. Just this past summer Grady Hendrix who is arguably the genre’s hottest author right now thanks to a string of hits, released The Final Girls Support Group also to rave reviews and bestseller numbers. Stephen King hailed it as the best thriller of the year and it was even spotlighted on the daytime talk show The View. In 2017, Riley Sager published his first standalone Final Girls to rave reviews and big sales. In the past few years two of the very best authors in the horror genre have tackled the idea of the Final Girl in with a new approach, looking at the mental, emotional, and spiritual scars left after their done battling the slasher. These smart and strong women are left standing when times comes to confront the maniac who has been hacking everyone to pieces. The one girl of the group who recognizes the dangers of camping in a place where plenty of people have been hacked up with a machete or locking the doors on Halloween to protect the kids they are babysitting. In the past few years, one of my favorite horror archetypes has seemingly taken on a new prominence in pop culture, the final girl. I try to steady myself, but my legs go out from under me. When the black outlines of trees overhead rustle, I jerk in surprise. The night is quiet, the kind of hushed middle-of-the-night quiet that makes every shuffle or nervous panting breath echo. Teetering, I will myself to be as still as possible. I don’t even know how to get where I am, which is a problem since I’m going to have to get down, ideally in a way that doesn’t involve dying. I have no memory of climbing the stairs up to the roof. Below me, the bronze statue of Colonel Wallingford makes me realize I’m seeing the quad from the peak of Smythe Hall, my dorm. I suck in a breath of icy air.Ībove me are stars. I WAKE UP BAREFOOT, standing on cold slate tiles. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Cancer schmancer by fran drescherGary Barg: I think you've been a caregiver to a lot of people since the book came out.įran Drescher: Yes. There are more and more specialists, and if you're not on top of the game, you're really putting your life in someone else's hands, and that is a terrible mistake. People never thought they should be partners with their physicians in the way they really need to be. I don't give anyone power of attorney over my money, so why should I do it over my body? Early detection equals survival when it comes to cancer, but so many symptoms can be mistaken for much more benign illnesses. Ultimately, it's your responsibility to take control of your body. Your doctor is a person, who is busy, has a lot of other patients, has his own personal life, has his own personal problems. If your doctor seems busy or seems like he's not giving you the amount of attention that you need, you have to move on. You have to ask questions and go on the Internet and know what your symptoms may be and what tests could be available. Gary Barg: What should people do when they first think they're not getting the care they deserve?įran Drescher: First of all, you have to take notes. The long, intense descriptions of Ravi's friendships and family in his early life come to nothing at all and the deaths of his family, while shocking, are ultimately meaningless in the story. The story floundered around with what felt like very little structure and while the other characters seemed interesting, each of them just seemed to peter out to nothing, fading away or simply being dispensed with, with no idea what they were there for in the first place. I found the two main characters to be passive, unsympathetic, un-engaging and two-dimensional. While there were certainly pieces of beautiful prose in this book, on the whole it simply did not deliver. One of the more disappointing books I've read this year, and why de Kretser won the Miles Franklin for this is anyone's guess. I've been reading and collecting John Gordon's books since about 1993, and I think he's a very special author, both as a children's writer and as a writer of ghost stories. Isn't is great when a book you re-read turns out to be just as good as you remember? Thanks for mentioning this one I had put together a rough bibliography (below) and read many of his ghost stories, but not that one. 6/10/2023 0 Comments The adventure of the empty houseWisely, Conan Doyle decided to keep Holmes and Watson in the Victorian age.Ĭhildren of a peer, male or female, would have "The Honourable" placed before their names. In October 1903, "The Empty House" marked the definitive return of the master detective.Įvents portrayed in "The Final Problem" take place in 1891, while "The Empty House" takes place only three years later, in 1894. Conan Doyle was not convinced to truly resurrect Holmes until two years later. In 1901, The Strand ran a new Holmes serial, the nine-part Hound of the Baskervilles. Over 20,000 people cancelled their subscriptions to The Strand Magazine, whose staff referred to Holmes's death as "the dreadful event." Arthur Conan Doyle had tired of his most popular creation, and was occupied with his first wife, who was gravely ill with tuberculosis. As they read "The Final Problem," readers were outraged to discover that their beloved character had apparently died while struggling with his nemesis Moriarty at the edge of a cliff. In December 1893, "The Final Problem" appeared in The Strand Magazine, signaling the start of eight long years without a new Holmes story. An illustration from Collier's Weekly, February, 1904 |
